About Me:

I am a retired Army Chaplain with over 31 years of military service. I entered the Army in 1972 shortly after graduating from HHS. I initially served as an enlisted soldier working in Personnel Administration. I achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant before applying for the Army's Rotary Wing Flight Training Program. Upon completion of Flight School, I served as a helicopter pilot for nearly eight years in both the Active Army and the Louisiana Army National Guard. I was promoted to the rank of Chief Warrant Officer 2 before returning to active duty as an Army Chaplain. I retired at the rank of Major. I am a veteran of OPERATIONS: Desert Shield and Desert Storm where I served with the 101st Airborne Division. I am now serving as the Senior Pastor of Living Waters Fellowship, Oak Grove, KY just outside the gates of Ft. Campbell, Kentucky, a Southern Baptist church that I had the privilege of starting upon my retirement from the Army. I am married to the former Caron "Renee" Joyner (Class of 1976) and we have four children, David Jr., Rachael, Nicole and Rebecca. I have 4 grandchildren with one more on the way this month. I hold a Bachelor of Professional Aeronautics Degree from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Daytona Beach (Class of 86), a Master of Divinity Degree from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary (Class of 88) and a Doctor of Ministry Degree from Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, Kansas City (Class of 2007). My claim to fame while attending Hillsborough was that I was one of the original members of the Sound System Singing Group. I was a sophomore at the time the group was formed by Jerry Skora. I remember sitting around the chorus room and thinking up the name for the group. I was also one of a few "three year" members. After our first year, we auditioned new members from the Junior and Senior classes only. Wow that was light years ago (sorry Jerry if that makes you feel old --because you are!)

  • Hey David,

This is Donna Fernandez. Do you keep up with Steve Russell? He's a Baptist pastor in Dothan Alabama. He came back to Tampa and did my husband's funeral, Billy Mitchell, for me.

  • Hi David. A Sound System Reunion is being planned for 2010 and I want to make sure you’re included. Please drop us an email at soundsystem.hhs@verizon.net so that we can better reach you directly. I promise, your email address will not be shared with anyone without your permission. In addition, if you haven’t already, I would encourage you to join our Sound System Group Page and share your memories with others…Thanks, Robert Ayo SS ‘71
  • David, How are you. Do you remember me? From New Orleans Baptist Church? Darrell and I are the same age. Terry Daniels also went to church with us. My mother still lives in the same house. I live in North Carolina.
  • Recently retired from Civil Service at Ft Campbell, CAAF Base Operations for 31 years and still live in Hopkinsville, KY small world isn't it my ol' friend.
  • Nice to see a familiar face. Welcome.
  • Thanks for joining the site. I hope you enjoy looking back. I sure have. This site was originally created by a member of my class (88) in preparation for our reunion last year.
  • Hi Cousin! Nice to see you on this site!
  • Hi David. Welcome to the web site. We had great times in SS 1971!
  • Hello David what a small world! I live in Hopkinsville, Ky and served at Ft. Campbell twice during my 5 years in the military. I also went in in 1972 and got out as a SGT after working in Flight Operations. Except for 2 years in Alaska Ft Richardson I have been in Hopkinsville this whole time. I just recently retired after working in Campbell Army Airfield Base Operations for 31 years. Surely our paths crossed in Base Ops one time or another and we proably never had a clue. As an original member of the Sound System I remember it like it was yesterday. It was GREAT to read your Bio and catch up with your life. Paul
