About Me:

I retired from the US Postal Service in 2002, and I am enjoying every moment. My wife (Shirley) and I have two boys, and two grandsons. After fourteen years of college, including a four year stint in the Air Force, I finally graduated from USF in 1974 with a degree in accouting, spent some time as an office manager for a construction company , and worked as Chief Accoutant and EDP manager for the city of Temple Terrace before becoming employed by the USPS in 1980. We attend Idlewild Baptist Church, where I have been playing in the church orchestsra... still trying to learn how to play my clairnet without squeeking. I have added the base clairnet and tenor saxophone to the list, and recently have spent most of my time playing the later. We bought a travel trailor in 2003, and have used it frequently on trips to the mountains. We especially enjoy the state parks. . Although my memory isn't what it used to be, I still spend lots of time reminiscing about the friends and acquaintences I had at HHS, perusing all the yearbooks and thinking how things use to be... wanting to change some things... wanting to re-live others. Many times I remember the names, but forget the things we did together. Sometimes, even not remembering names though they signed my annual. So Sad... I'm so nostalgic; and unfortunately, time does erase memories. Sigh! However, hats off and lots of accolades to Charles and Sandi Harkness for all their time and labor of love to maintain contacts with classmates. Keep up the good work. If we forget old friends, we can meet new ones!!

  • Hello Eric,
Thank you for your kind words regarding my granddaughter. She a doll, the pride of our eyes and a very well behaved young lady. She is being educated a true "Southern Belle" in Charleston, on John's Island, SC.

It's always good to hear from our classmates. Hope to see you at our (can you believe) 50th class reunion. You should consider attented the "Mountain Gathering" next year. Such wonderful hosts, gear classmates and did I mention lots and lots of food. We have had great times at Bill and Mary's Middlebrooks place in Whittier, NC now for the second year. Try to plan the next one in 2010. Who would even dreamed of say 2010 back in 1960.

    Great to hear from you'

    John M.
  • Hi Eric,
Hope you are not getting this twice, but I was typing you a note and hit something and it was gone. Good to hear about your life since 1960, and what you have accomplished and about your family.
Yes I did say life has been good, and I know very well that it is only though the Grace of God that I am still here.My health took a real tun in 2005 and I have just started to making a come back, and I am most gratefull for that.
We had a trailer for years and really enjoyed it, and like you we enjoyed some of the state parks.
Well you take care and keep in touch, and life every minute like it is your last. Rena
  • Yes Jimmy Dunn is my brother, & I married Jimmy Lane. I don't remember alot about Memorial, but I do know I enjoyed my years at Memorial & Hillsborough. Jenny Sue
  • Thanks for your reply. Does Shirley enjoy tea also? I definitely do. Anyway, I did actually evacuate to my daughter's home Fri @6pm until Mon @10am. On return, I drove to the fire site & WOW, what a shock. Too close for comfort. Jim was in GA & will be here tmo, so he missed all that! It's a comfort knowing ya'll are nearby even tho we don't interact. Still love you both. Take care.
  • Hi, Eric. It's good to hear from you. Good memory.
Becki is married now and lives in Lutz; Shaina lives with her Mom in Tampa and starts her academic career in August at Emry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona. Jess still lives in California and made me a grandpa in '06.
It is really beautiful out here. The majestic mountains are something to behold...I have two mountain ranges right here...one on the east and one on the west. Every morning I enjoy my daily devotions and coffee while looking out on God's beautiful creation.
I am actively involved in a small country church called Alta Canyon Baptist Church (SBC affiliated). We average 36 at our services (including children), but the Holy Spirit is alive and well and we are quite active most of the time. Check out our website at www.altacanyonbaptistchurch.org.
In my spare time I volunteer through the county aging services division and the Veteran's Administration as a Senior Companion 12 hours a week helping vets maintain an independent living style so they can remain in their homes.
I'm the acting director of our men's group called "Men of Alta"...how original...and lead a Wednesday night men's bible study called "MasterLife Discipleship". On Sundays I greet and usher. And I am the editor of our website. I try to stay busy. Retirement? What is that?
In my other spare time :>) I just enjoy the community and the area's activities.
Wow! Didn't mean to go on so. Please give my warmest regards to our mutual friends, acquaintences, and leadership at Idlewild.
I hope to get home for the reunion next year. Perhaps we can meet then. Are you still involved in the Idlewild orchestra?
  • Hi Eric & Shirley,
Enjoyed reading your notes about yourself. Jim & I attended the mountain gathering in Whittier, NC @ the Middlebrooks' home and also attended last week's monthly dinner w/HHS classmates. Missed you two being there. We still have a great group of HHS friends around to enjoy sharing memories. Keep in touch. Best Regards, Barbra
  • Eric,
Welcome aboard. Glad you signed up. When you get a chance, please join the Class of '60 group where some of your old school friends are. It makes it easier to send messages to everyone. Sorry you guys missed this year's Mountain Gathering. You could have joined Frank Young and Billy Roberts in the camper park in Bryson City. How is your wife by the way? Doing well I hope. Mark your calendar for October 9 and 10 for the big Homecoming Bash. Charles
